What is Chi Nei Tsang?

Chi Nei Tsang is a Taoist massage technique developed by Master Mantak Chia of the Universal Healing Tao system.

Chi Nei Tsang directly translates to "working the energy of the internal organs." It is a detoxifying, energizing, abdominal massage which blends Chinese and Thai massage and meditation techniques, making it more than just a massage; it's a holistic approach to healing.

The roots of abdominal massage can be traced back to Taoist monks in ancient China who used these techniques to detoxify and strengthen their bodies, allowing them to meditate for extended periods without discomfort. Chi Nei Tsang massage developed by Master Mantak Chia focuses on deep, soft, and gentle touches on the abdomen to train internal organs to work more efficiently and address postural problems and muscle tensions.

The Taoists understood that if the abdomen has tangled knots, all the vital energy of the body is blocked. When this happens, the essential energy functions, as described in Traditional Chinese Medicine, are obstructed, which in turn weakens the internal vital organs and eventually exhausts the body’s vital energy.

By directly massaging the navel area and the entire abdomen which Taoists call the Tan Tien (field of the elixir, and in the West is known as the 2nd brain (works of Gershon 1970), Chi Nei Tsang helps to quickly evacuate negative emotions, tension and sick energy, bringing comfort and a feeling of stability.

The techniques learnt in CNT I activate the vital energy necessary for the internal organs and the proper functioning of the human body. Chi Nei Tsang also helps relieve many digestive disorders, it helps detoxify the digestive and lymphatic systems and enhances blood circulation.

Master Mantak Chia, a Taoist Master from Thailand, is credited with developing its healing properties as part of the Healing Tao System and popularising this technique in the West. He established the Universal Healing Tao Center in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 1993, where he teaches various Taoist practices, including 5 levels of Chi Nei Tsang.
